Throwing Your Webpage Together Is Throwing Your Money Away

Tuesday, 12 March 2013 00:00

If your cousin’s kid took a class in high school about building web pages, is that really the guy you want to design one of the major elements of your marketing campaign? (Even though I’m sure he’s a very nice kid.)

If you are still resistant to the idea that you need a presence on the internet, welcome to real life. Not only do you need a web page. It needs to be a very good web page. When a potential customer visits your page, you have exactly five seconds to draw them in before they go elsewhere.

It’s true that you can buy some software off the shelf and throw together your own web page (if the cousin’s kid is too busy killing zombies online). Of course, it will look like you bought some software off the shelf and threw together your own web page.

You don’t really need to get a professionally designed web page with custom tracking abilities — unless, of course, you want to look like a professional organization.

The choice is up to you.

If you decide to go with the kid, it will probably be a good learning experience for him. He will soon find out that he’s in over his head and he will either find an easier hobby (hence the video games) or get some post-high school training.

If you decide to go with the professional, make sure you hire someone that knows what they’re doing. (Here’s a clue: the lowest price may not always be the best deal.) Your web page should reflect your company’s personality. Is it quirky? Formal? Established? Up and coming? It must be clean and easy to navigate — those five seconds can really get away from you. You also need clear and concise copy, not too wordy. You have to capture the reader’s attention, without bogging them down.

If you want to save some money, replace the toilet paper with 1-ply instead of 2-ply in the employee’s lounge. But don’t skimp on your web page; it’s working for you ‘round the clock.
