Dealing With That One Annoying Person

Think about that one client or coworker that drives you crazy. You know, the super annoying one. Grab a piece of paper and make two columns. On the left side list their quirky traits that bug you. What about them is so hard to get along with? On the right side list things they should be doing that would make them happier and easier to work with.

Now for the hard part. Cross their name off the top of the list and write in your own.

If you are honest with yourself, you will find that the things that annoy you in other people are traits that you actually exhibit. It’s not so much that we see the faults in others as it is that we see our own faults when we look at other people.

In Shakespeare’s Julius Ceaser, Cassius says, “The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings.” He’s talking about how we create our own destiny.

Here’s a modern day example. I have noticed I am especially irritated by people that dominate the conversation. It was a real ah-ha moment for me when I turned the proverbial tables and recognized that of all the people in my circles, they very one most likely to dominate a conversation is me! I am the worst offender.

This insight into myself has served me well on two points.1) Now that I’m aware of my habit, I can more easily reign myself in, and 2) I have more compassion when I run across one of “those kinds” of people.

Granted this is a marketing blog. So what’s the connection?

Marketing is not about websites and advertising and campaigns. Those are tools. Marketing is about people — clients and customers. And it’s about you. Marketing is about promoting your product, but your business boils down to you.

So, despite that it will make you feel uncomfortable, take a long and honest look at yourself. And, again borrowing from Mr. Shakespeare, “To thine own self be true.”
